I really enjoy the resort and would good again , the only issue was that some staff didnt really speak much english or at all causing a bit of a language barrier which made it a little difficult at times for simple requests or question to be answered ... overall a great resort

Not for the mature crowd...dont do it!

We went as a friends trip in May. Immediately on arrive it appeared to be a college spring break vibe with lots 20 year olds. Next we went to our room which was advertised as a two bedroom with sitting area. The door had a large gap that let in tons of light and was a safety concern for four females, there was visable large stains on the beds and floor. one friend is severely allergic to mold and Immediately broke out, and a strong urine smell. We didn't even want to sit down. We called Immediately to the front desk. They offered another room that was very similar to the first, but with no escort to show the room, they just handed us the key. After calling our vacation rep and exploring other options we were checked out in about 4 - 5hours from check in. The front desk kept telling us a manager was on his way while we were waiting to leave, but when he arrived he advised the owner or person who could make decisions wasn't in.

    Not Great!

The property is beautiful, BUT, the rooms are severely dated. The food is just okay, however they need to make an effort to get it better. The staff come in and out of your room without permission. Someone stole a $100 bill out of my room in the evening when I wasn't expecting anyone to enter the room. When I complained to the manager, he didn't seem surprised.

First time in Dominican Republic -an honest review of the Riu Republica

Not our first time in a Riu ( been to one in Cape Verde) but our first time in Dom Rep and were super excited to be there. We booked the Riu because of the price ( over a year ago) and we like Riu hotels so it seemed like a win win. As the holiday got closer, we started seeing several reports/reviews in the media about this hotel and it was quite negative talking about it being a 'party hotel', reports of people having sex in the pools, drunk people passed out everywhere, lack of hygiene from holidaymakers in the pool/swim up bar areas, lots of noise from parties etc , drug use and how it was more for youngsters... Not something we were too keen on but we went with an open mind and boy were we were glad we went. The hotel, the staff, the amenities , the weather, just everything was so good and the bottom line is we loved it !! As we went with Tui, we got the airport transfer and as this hotel seems to be at the end of the line, be prepared for stopping at every other hotel first so might be better to pay for a private transfer. Checking in was pretty simple and within a short while we were in our rooms. Rooms are quite spacious and nicely laid out. we opted for ground floor so a small verandah with upper floors having balconies. Odd thing is the way the side of the shower is frosted glass looking into the bedroom which is quite funny when anyone is having a shower ! The beds are massive , quite easily sleep three people in a bed. Clean and tidy and as per normal, cleaned every day ( though ours was missed a few times so best chase them up via the app if that happens) and mini bar restocked every 2 days. Note: as the cleaners tend to use bleach on the bathroom floor, dont leave any clothes or bags on the floor as they will get marked. Tip. if you prefer the quiet side of the hotel ( away from the bars and night club, ask for the top left side of the hotel towards the Saona pool bar as that block is much much quieter , especially at night. The RIU app. Very handy when you there, from a map of the resort to booking stuff to room requests. We used it several times to request a room clean, extra pillows and once our shower was broken and they seemed to reply and respond pretty quick though it does take a few tries sometimes. Keycards. This was highlighted by other people but basically the system is flawed , old and in desperate need of fixing. We spent our days making at least 3-4 trips to reception to get new cards coded. The cards lasted for a few hours or tries before failing and it was a huge PITA to go back to reception, They will say it is because you had your mobile close to the card or some other reason but put simply they dont work so be perpared for the long walk back to reception everytime this happens..grr Hotel grounds Really nicely laid out with so much of the hotel walkways and paths under cover which is handy when it is 33 degrees blazing sun and/or pouring down with rain in the wet season ( we went in August so slap bang in the middle of stormy/hurricane season ) . loads of grass areas, palm trees and gardens and well maintained. The layout of the hotel is well thought out so you can walk and access everywhere pretty easily. Bars and Restaurants So many to chose from you will be spoilt for choice. Three of the pools have swim up bars and then you have various bars dotted around, most serve unbranded spirits and Presedente is the beer of choice, very nice it is especially on a hot day in the pool . There are several restaurants , aside from the two main buffets. Majority are buffet like the Italian etc but two are waitress service like the two steak houses but make sure you scan the QR code first for the menu or study the menu outside as they dont give you actual menus when seated. Cant comment on many as we only used the steakhouse and Italian. The Jerk chicken shack near the beach is very popular but unlike Nando's where you can choose your spice, this is one spice only and its hot..I loved it but milder palates be aware. The Beach We ventured onto this several times, for a walk and dive into the ocean which was lovely and warm. However when it is windy ( which it was for us) it gets very choppy and the waves/current is strong. I personally loved it but a few of our party struggled to stand upright :) and there tends to be a lot of seaweed which gets thrown up onto the beach at high tide. Aside from that it is lovely and the sand is gorgeous to walk on. Clubs/noise/parties They do trips to a nearby RIU hotel every monday and friday for those who want to serious party and every now and then they have a white party/neon party onsite near the nightclub. Not in that age bracket but our daughter really enjoyed it so fill your boots. I guess those rooms above the nightclub would comment more on the noise but we were the other side so not fussed. One shop onsite which is not cheap but good to pick up a few bits and bobs for friends back home, just dont buy the suntan lotion as you will get a nasty financial surprise..around £40 for a bottle of suntan oil..eek ! We took a trip on the boat to Seona Island which is covered on a separate review but if you do, choose the basic trip as the deluxe/supreme trip is not worth the extra money. You can also take trips like zip lining, safari etc but aside from that, there is not a huge amount to see and do outside the hotel. Overall we found it blissful at the hotel, the staff are so laid back and friendly and there was always a space on the sun loungers or beach, more than enough to drink and eat and the weather was fab so highly recommend this hotel.
