Lovely quiet stay with amazing service!

Our room was beautiful partial ocean view and partial pool view. From the beginning of our stay everyone was welcoming and helpful. The guest services were accommodating with whatever we needed such as transportation, recommendations etc. We meet with the GM of Food, David who was very nice and helpful and resourceful he gave us suggestions on what to do or where to go. It was my birthday and he made sure to add a touch. We also met with the new GM of the property, Gerard on his first who was very nice and explained he will be working to make this place even better! If you're looking for a relaxing romantic getaway away from the noise this is the place for you! The only downside was the weather because of Hurricane season, and wifi was out in the room, other than that just a few touchups needed but we had an amazing time!

    Worth the trip

Here’s my 100% truthful account of staying at this property so you can decide for yourself about coming here after all the reviews you read. It’s gonna be long. Please note: I am a single female traveling alone for vacation. Transportation: I used Rolly’s Transportation Services, which I found on TripAdvisor, to take me from the airport to the hotel as I was concerned about what the taxi system would be. What an amazing person! He gave me a history tour along the way and offered to stop at a little quick shop so that I could get gatorades/water for my stay. The standard rate for transportation to/from the airport is $35 cash so be prepared. On the first day I was here I booked a zip lining adventure with Carambola Zip Line. The front desk set up a driver (Victor) to take me to and from the location which round trip was $28. (Note: many people rent a car here but there was no way I was driving on the left side of the road) Distance: the hotel is about 20+ minutes from the two major cities. This is exactly what I wanted as I had no interest in really leaving the property during my stay. Rooms/property: the property is a set up of villas. Each building looks to have about 6 rooms. Some are further from the main house than others but it’s not much of a walk. At night there are a few spots that could use some extra lighting on the walkway but I never felt that I couldn’t see in front of me or behind me. After reading other reviews I did ask to be put in an updated room. I had an Oceanview junior suite and it was everything the website said it would be. I had no problems with electricity or wi-fi. I never turned the TV on but it does have an HDMI port if you wanted to bring a ruku (I just watched Netflix on my computer). Also, if you’re a regular with Marriott’s call them to use your free night stay + points for one of your nights. I had to call in order to apply this. When you call ask if they have a savor and save option which is a $200 credit towards food and beverage (or it was when I booked it). This hotel has had to rebuild at least twice due to hurricanes and is working hard to do it. If you walk toward the tide pool trail (which I chickened out of doing alone) you can still see some of the destruction at what used to be a basketball court. Bring snacks if you don’t get a car. There is a small snack area at the front desk but it’s just easier to pack some of your own. Also, there is no gift shop so don’t forget your flip flops like I did. Safety: when you go in and out of the property there is an attendant at a gate. You must give your name and room for property access. In addition, there’s always someone riding around on a golf cart checking on things (shout out to Dave). Beach: the section of beach by the volleyball net has about 30 beach chairs along with umbrellas. I never had a problem getting a seat or an umbrella. It was definitely my favorite place to be for the first half of the day. Pool: the pool area has cabanas that are first come first serve. There’s additional seating around the pool but limited umbrellas. The tile around the pool could use some care and the pool steps are slippery (as other reviews have stated). The pool was cleaned everyday. It was never crowded and definitely my favorite place to be for the second half of the day. (Note: the hotel was at about 60% capacity during my stay). Bar/Restaurant(s): there is limited dining options, but if you know that going, it doesn’t really matter much. Breakfast is buffet. I learned on the second day to ask for the light buffet option as I was not going to use the omelette station. That makes a big difference in the price (and I was slightly disappointed I was not told about this when I checked in with all the other information they gave me). Lunch and Dinner: the pool area has a bar and restaurant. The price of the drinks and food is the same as staying in the states (literally paid the same thing the week before in Jersey City for a work event at the Westin). I did find the staff to be a little slow on service but kept the mind set that we were running on island time. Please remember, as with most islands, everything we consume is imported so prices may reflect that. Housekeeping: the one day that I did ask for the room to be cleaned everything was tidied up well, except for the cleaning of the shower. I did speak with the Housekeeping manager who was wonderful to work with. Nightlife: there is none so be prepared if traveling solo. The bar area is pretty quiet and by 10pm I was in bed watching Netflix. I will say, I got to play a mean game of pool in the game room and the evening bartenders were fun to sit and talk with. I did not run into one unhappy employee! Everyone was great and friendly, though I also made sure my approach was the same. I would not hesitate to return here.

    Its alright

I have mixed feelings about the resort. Very expensive and doesn’t offer much at all. Issues started immediately. We ordered an OCEANVIEW room and got stuck in a PARTIAL OCEANVIEW. Luckily my wife complained and got us moved to a great oceanview room. Still though, when you pay extra for a view and drop significant money on accommodations this shouldn’t happen. The pool has a ton of loose and uneven pavers that will roll an ankle severely, The food is limited and over priced as you would expect at a resort. There is no shuttle service, no tours, no local guides or anything. The room is decent inside. Some water damage from the A/C drain being backed up. Got a fridge but no microwave. The positives…. The beach is beautiful. The vibe is good atmosphere wise but the staff is not very welcoming. Not bad, just there. The mountains around the resort are amazing. The king size bed is comfy. Definitely have to rent a car unless you want to spend $80 per taxi ride. You’d think the resort would at least have an airport shuttle considering how many of my flightmates are at the resort. Best part of the resort is the North Shore location. Beautiful views.

    Never again

We went here for my husbands 40th birthday with some of his family for 8 days. There were 10 of us split into 3 rooms. We booked 3 of the Oceanview rooms with kitchenettes. My sister-in-law arrived first and was told they only had one room with a kitchenette available and 2 rooms with partial oceanviews.. We were like okay, well as long as one of the rooms has the kitchenette we can make due for the kids stuff. We arrived with the rest family members staying in the 3rd room and they told us they had no rooms with kitchenettes and that we only booked partial Oceanview rooms. I booked this through AMEX, so I called them and they called the hotel where they agreed it was booked for the Oceanview view rooms, but there was nothing they could do about. They told them we were welcome to cancel and they would refund us so we could find another place to stay. I wasn't really happy with their solution, but we couldn't find another place to stay at on such short notice so we stayed. We should have left, it was just one thing after another. They have strayed cats and dogs that are randomly aggressive on the property. Not to mention my husband is allergic to cats. One of the cats scratched one of the kids and they were bleeding. The management said the cats aren't their responsibility and they didn't have any kind of first aid kit to clean the wound. The cat was back the next day and nobody at the hotel cared that is attacked a child, I am guessing this happens often. We had a Birthday dinner the last night and we were sat around 7:15pm. We tried to order immediately, but it took the server about 20 minutes to take our orders. We finally got our food around 9:30pm and I asked for the dessert menu when my food was delivered so we could order Birthday cake and go see the bioluminessence. She said the kitchen was closed and we couldn't order dessert. The food at Suman was great as was Nicholas. Mark at the pool bar was also great and so was Ken from the dive shop. The cleaning staff was nice, but outside of giving clean towels and periodically changing the sheet our room wasn't really cleaned. We ended up extending our stay in St. Croix, but we moved to the Buccaneer and that experience was so much better!

The Best Beach Hotel in St. Croix? Or Just Maybe the Most Private...

We jumped into the Carambola at the last minute after a midnight attempted break in at our previous hotel (ahem, be careful whom you sleep with, particularly if his name is Fred). We got in at a last minute great deal with a beachfront 2nd story room. It ended up being less expensive than our previous location and a much better value overall. (We booked the other hotel, rhymes with dead, through American Airlines Vacation, which I adamantly do not recommend.) We were nestled away in the far western end. On the plus side, it was quiet with little traffic on the beach or sidewalk. On the down side, it was a long walk to pool, restaurant, and front desk. They will drive you via golf cart to your room with your bags (and supposedly you can schedule a pick up for check out, but that didn't work for us). The room was nice, if not a little run down like the rest of the hotel. My understanding is that they only recently reopened since the hurricane, but it doesn't feel freshly updated so I presume they have been open longer or are still somewhat in the process of a full overhaul. There are still components in need of repair, particularly trim work and other areas. The hotel grounds were very pretty as were the views but the pool needs some freshening up, both with paint in the pool and tiles on the walkway. Food was very good (crab cakes for the win!) but very limited options. You have the choice of the grill/bar or Saman, which is only open on some evenings. We dined at the latter once and it was excellent. We ate at Flamboyant both in the grill and poolside. The food was good, but not great. There is no gift store or shop on site (besides a small cooler by the front desk), which makes a trip off site necessary for anything else. There are some options down the road about a 10 minute drive, such as The Landing, but no shopping nearby so plan accordingly. The beach is fantastic. Very walkable with mild waves and warm water. Sea turtles were in the area during our stay. This is a great snorkel/dive spot. You can snorkel for quite a ways off shore and then hit the wall to dive directly from the beach. I'd stay here again if only to hike the tide pool trail, but would probably check to see where they are on renovations before I took the plunge. Regardless, I am glad we had the chance to stay here.
